02/10/2003 - a new world

This page refers to my previous page which could be named "pics of junks" … This one will deal with the installation and my advice on what I just bought : a new motherboard+Processor+DDR Ram. Just enjoy, but sorry for the shade effect on pictures, a violent parkingson attack I presume …

My brand new Intel P4C 2.8GHz ! Rahhhh ... Just one bad point : the box looks good, but the inside is really cheap for a processor of that value ! Ah, Intel ... My last one was a PIII 550B, and I was pretty happy with it ... but, one day, they decided that slot 1 was a mistake ... I take this shot for it's size. Look at it ! It's just terrific

My new motherboard : Asus P4C800. I didn't take the Deluxe since the only difference seems to be the second serial ATA connector, and maybe a firewire port.

Corsair TWinX PC3200 Low Latency 2*256Mo DDR SDRam. Quite a name ... But I'm still not sure that've done a good deal, in fact, I took them in order to have the maximum stability, the Low Latency and things do not mean that much for me. Especially since I still don't know if the "auto" settings of the motherboard take full advantage of those RAM modules.

If you remember the lasts shots, my graphic card is approxymately 5cm wide, so you can imagine what for a kid game this socket 478 is ! Smaller than a 486 ... I may try once to compare it to a 386.

This thing is noisy ! That's my next tunning objective : be quiet ! For those who are curious, the two plastic things looking like the one on a ZIF socket are used to maintain everything. And it's pretty strong ! More than all I ever seen when setting a socket, with the big advantage to be really easy to remove.

The Agp pro effect, double size, double speed, double cost ?

Quite a number of things behind. Note that this motherboard is "thinking" ... Well, in fact it detects on boot if the 3 rear jacks have something else plugged in. Yes, if you use the 6.1 feature, you won't be able to use a mic. Except maybe with the SPDIF ?

Black, they are black. I suppose it is part of the "today's computer world", maybe tomorrow with leds ?

Final look. Yes, I didn't successfully resist ... I filled those places with fans ... And the front one too ... Which made the "quiet" objective pretty hard to reach.

Final look : two stickers !

I love the plug&play !

I love the plug&play second ! but this one is for linux ... It seems that the motherboard isn't yet supported by the kernel 2.6.0-test6. At first, I did have to keep pushed any key in order to get the computer continue working (in this case, compiling a kernel). And after, I've discovered a compatibility mode in the bios (after an update of it) and all the problemd come from the IDE bus which is at IRQ 18 instead of the normal 14/15 ... But with this answer, I'm still not up : the Gigabit Lan chip from 3com is also not supported ... Next time ...
